The name Anticline Cave came from the geological formation of a fold in the thinly bedded limestone, know as an 'Anticline'. The Cave is also often referred to as Water Cave due to the presence of a 'lake' at the bottom, which rises and falls with the groundwater table.

This is a significant cave as the process of how caves are formed from the laying down of the marine sediments 400 million years ago, the folding of the bedding is quite dramatic and the dissolving process from rainwater above and groundwater below demonstrate this exceptionally well.

This 'Karst' (Dissolved Landscape) feature is known as an 'Estavelle' for it is where rain water seeps and sinks downward and at times the ground water does rise and overflow outward.
